using a Thumbnail Sketch

as a preliminary drawing, to find out the size/shape of the figure and blocking out a quick composition before you begin the bigger drawing.

Beginning students should make a small box in the upper left or right corner of their paper, and use that as a representation of the larger page. Draw a quick, rough sketch that will act as a plan. It can help you find a way to fit the whole figure on your page, and plan how much of the surrounding environment you'll include.
